I got to talk to my paternal grandmother today. It was the first time in more than a year. You see, she has Alzheimer's, and in her state of mind she had decided that she no longer wanted to see my mother, my sister, or me. We were hurt, but we understood that it was the disease. We figured we wouldn't see her again this side of Heaven.
Today, when I called my dad on his cell phone, he was visiting Grandma Bunny and she wanted to talk to me. We had a little chat. She asked me if I was going to get married soon. I told her that I'd already been married for a year and that I'm very happy. She asked what my "young man's" name is, and I reminded her that his name is Michael. She said that was a good Irish name. She then asked if I was taking care of my girls. At that point I thought she was probably confusing me with my sister, but I told her I was. Then I told her that I love her and that I pray for her. That was about it, but it was good to hear her voice.
The real blessing came when my dad was preparing to leave. My mom was out in the car waiting for him, and Grandma got on the phone with her and agreed that Mom could come in to see her. They had a sweet exchange. Mom called me afterward and she said she felt so blessed that she got to see Grandma again.
It is my prayer that the Lord would be merciful towards Grandma and take her home to be with Him soon. We will celebrate that day!

Thinking of you and yours. Such a very difficult disease to experience in our loved ones.
I can relate. My Grandma has Alzheimers and the last 2 weeks have been very very hard for her (and me!) Poor luv, has had two falls, 3 trips to the hospital, 1 UTI, 2 days of halicinations, 2 escapes from her care facility... all in the last 10 days.
Alzheimers is a very slow, cruel disease.
I have been praying the same thing for my Grandma.
